Anyone watch the news? Recently I have really gotten into following the news and politics. I'm not in your face about what I believe, but I do like to keep up with what is going on in the world because I think it is very important. Living in Texas, the abortion bill Filibuster that took place last night really caught my attention. I stayed up late with my good friend Faith watching the live stream of the courtroom and watched as the events unfolded before our very eyes. This bill would have shut down numerous abortion clinics throughout our state of Texas. It would have made it illegal to have an abortion past 20 weeks into the pregnancy. What surprised me the most was that the bill had 90% approval, however it failed to pass because of how outspoken and stubborn the opposing party was. Even though I do not agree with what they stand for, I have to give the democrats some credit. They do a very good job of standing up for what they believe and being outspoken about it. Look where this gets them. They stop bills from being passed, even though they have 90% approval rates. They get presidents elected, even though the popular vote is for the opposing candidate. What would it look like if we took a stand for what we believe, just like the democrats do. What would happen if our generation really took a stand for what they believe? We need to raise our new generation in the mind set of not settling for anything less than what we know to be true and right. This current generation, in my opinion, has not done the best job at standing up. Look where our country is. We are killing babies and making it legal. We promote sexual promiscuity and say it is the normal thing to do. We allow gay marriages to take place because "that's the way they were born." I ask this question. How can you be a christian and be okay with those things? You can't. If you look at God's word with an open and moldable heart you will begin to see that you simply cannot justify those things. We love the sinners, but we have to be disgusted by the sin. When we read in Romans 13:1-5 we see that everyone must submit to the governing authorities...for there is no authority except that which God has established. We must respect all authority to which God has placed above us. However, we do not have to conform to their beliefs.
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. THen you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will."
Romans 12:1-2
We are called to have childlike faith. In other words, faith like a child while thinking like an adult. We are not called to be as unwise as children. God demands excellence. Therefore, we must make sure that everything we stand for is excellent. We must put to test the things of this world and make sure they line up with God's word. What if we put to test the things that the world exemplifies as normal? The things that we as christians have adopted into our culture and Church. Would they be good, pleasing, and perfect in God's eyes?
I want my generation to be a generation of people that stand up and are outspoken. We need to make a difference in this world. We are called to stand up for the things that are perfect and pleasing to God. The world laughs at the few who do. We need to take a stand and be salty against the world's beliefs. We could be as influential as Wendy Davis and her stand against the new Texan abortion bill. The bill will be back and reopened for debate sometime. When it does, I hope that we as Christians (and Texans) are ready to also make some noise and cheer for 30 minutes about the things that we believe and know to be true.
I'm ready to cheer on that new bill!!
